For all my Live Journal friends in the San Diego area, The Palominos are going to be playing the Adams Avenue street fair this Saturday evening at 6 PM. Admission is free!! After the performance, please come up to me and say hi. Here is a link to the schedule : www.adamsavenuebusiness.com And you may ask just who are the Palominos? Well it's the country/rockabilly band I'm in. I sing lead and play rhythm guitar, with James Zureck on bass guitar, Thomas Zureck on lead guitar and harmony vocals and Mike Marcott on drums. Just cause (Stoen from bigdave)
Just cause... 1. You can ONLY answer 'Yes' or 'No'. 2. You are NOT ALLOWED to explain ANYTHING unless someone comments you and asks— and, believe me, the temptation to explain some of these will be overwhelming. Nothing is exactly as it seems. Recording Date
On May 2nd & 3rd I go into the Soil Of The South recording studio in San Diego to record with the Palominos. My first professional recordings in almost 11 years. I'm so excited!! Current Mood: giddy | | Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | | 3:29 am |
Things are going fast
OK so I'm going to Orlando, FL from May 10th through the 17th. Shortly after I get back I go into the recording studio to cut the vocals on the upcoming album for the Palominos. It's so weird, I just got hired to be their vocalist/rhythm guitarist and now I'm recording. I feel like this is a scene out of "How To Suceed In Business Without Really Trying" (Yes I'm showing by gayness by referencing a Broadway musical). Damn. Not doing BBQ fest
Well I rehearsed with the Palominos this last Saturday and everyone (the guys in the band, their manager, and myself) were very happy with the results. So I've got two expenses I have to get - A new acoustic guitar as mine is pretty worn out and a band uniform. Thier uniform consists of a western cut jacket and a cowboy hat. Within the next few weeks I have to go the western wear store in San Diego where James and Thomas got their jackets and get fitted for a jacket of my own and get my head measured for a hat. We were booked to play the Los Angeles Bar-B-Que festival on May 11th at the Santa Monica pier but due this was booked before the former lead singer and drummer quit and I'm not up to speed on their original songs, we had to cancel. On one hand I'm kind of relived that we're not doing this for the above reason but on the other hand I'm sad because I was looking forward to making my debut with the band. I'm hoping we'll get to play there next year. I'll let you know when and where we'll be playing and if you're in the Los Angeles or San Diego area, I hope you'll come out to see us. Good news X 2
I'm sorry that I haven't posted lately but the past three weeks or so have been so busy I haven't had the chance. Here's what's been going on: 1. I have a full time job!!! As of Monday I'm working at KKGO-FM (Go Country 105) and KGIL-AM as a board operarator. In other words I make sure the stations stay on the air. The hours aren't great (Mon-Fri 12 AM-7AM) but I'm making more $$ than I have in my life and I have my weekends free, which is a good thing because: 2. I have been hired by a country music band in San Diego called the Palominos to be their lead singer. They have some big projects in the works that, unfortantly, I can't talk about right now but will reveal them as time goes on. I'm so excited. It's like all my dreams are coming true!! What if they had an election and nobody came
We're having an election here in Los Angeles for mayor and other city government seats and apparently.....no one cares!! Antonio Villaraigosa is running for a second term as mayor, but there have been no mudslinging, in fact no campaign ads ads at all. If it wasn't for the fact that I see 9 other names on the ballot (including one named David "Zuma Dogg" Saltsburg who I might vote for just for the name alone)I would assume Villaraigosa is running unopposed. Rumor has it that Villaraigosa may be running for governor when Ah-nolds term ends next year. I hope he does. We someone better than the idiot that's been there and preferably it will be a Democrat. But back to this election. From the news reports I've heard, voter turnout has been very low and may hit an all time low for a mayoral election. Like the old saying goes, if you don't vote-don't bitch! Current Mood: disappointed | | Sunday, January 18th, 2009 | | 5:29 am |
Circuit City going out of business sale...Yeah right
I went to Circuit City yesterday and I wasn't impressed. As I entered the store, I saw a lot of people leaving empty handed and I overheard someone ask an associate "Aren't you having a store closing sale"? The associate said "Ahh sort of". I saw things there that were "on sale" that I could get at Best Buy or Fry's Electronics at regular price that was much cheaper. And are we shocked that Circuit City is going out of business? Not me. The utter nonsense of Prop 8
I've been looking at the blogs about the defeat of prop 8 and all I can say is it just shows that no matter how far we think we've come (i.e. Obama getting elected president), there is still bigotry in this country to set us back. Denying same sex couples the right to marry is such an archaic idea it should be laughed at if it were not true. What makes me angry is while we've been stripped of our rights (and I'm not making this up) Danny Bonaduce is getting ready to host a new reality show called "The Next Mrs. Bonaduce" where bimbos will vie to get married to this hot headed, full of himself, has been child star and will have more rights than couples who have been together for years! What a fucking joke. Oh yeah, let's protect marriage. Current Mood: annoyed | | Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 | | 10:30 pm |

I went to my first "official" gay wedding yesterday. My two best friends, John & Art, tied the knot with their two kids(o.k. Japanese chin dogs) Barron & Hannah in attendance. It was a beautiful ceremony and I hope to witness more of these the future. But I won't if Prop 8 passes so please, please, please Californians, get out today and vote NO to this horrible proposition. Also just because the polls, pundits and others predict Obama will win, DON'T BE COMPLACENT and think "Obama will win, I don't need to vote". Polls are one thing but the actual voting means we have a voice. So if you haven't done it yet, GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND VOTE!!!!! Why did the chicken cross the road ?
WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? SARAH PALIN: Before it got to the other side, I shot the chicken, cleaned and dressed it, and had chicken burgers for lunch. BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a change! The chicken wanted change! JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road. HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me. GEORGE W. BUSH: We don' t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here. DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun? COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chic ken crossing the road. BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. What is your definition of chicken? AL GORE: I invented the chicken. JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now and will remain against it. AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens. DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken doesn't realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems. OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens. ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed access to the other side of the road. NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks. PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American. MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information. DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told. ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone. GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough. BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart-warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road. ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road. JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace. BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken 2008, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken 2008. This new platform is much more stable and will never crash or need to be rebooted. ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken? COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one? | | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | | 8:18 am |

For George Carlin fans
I mentioned this to JerryCakes but thought I'd pass it along to all of us George Carlin fans in case you hadn't heard. Although it's available on DVD, this Saturday evening at 11:30 PM NBC is running the very first episode of SNL done on Oct 11, 1975 that George Carlin hosted. I have a copy on DVD and it's interesting to see how much different the show was. For one thing George only did stand up, he didn't appear in any of the sketches (his stand up routines and the sketches are very safe BTW, not as edgy as we're used to). The musical guests were Billy Preston & Janis Ian and they had a sketch by the Muppets that's kind of lame. Also the show is called "NBC's Saturday Night" due to the fact ABC had a variety show on called "Saturday Night Live With Howard Cossell". In any event you might find this interesting. Explaination on the situation at work....Sort of... I guess
So I went to my boss yesterday (very cool and collective - thanks guys for your input) for an explanation of why I was passed over for the blues show (see previous post). This is what he said went down: He received a phone call from this new guy (whom I will call Rick) who used to work as a DJ at an adult standards station they used to run. Apparently Rick's wife had a stroke and the medical bills are eating them up. Rick asked was there anything they had available for him to do. My boss told him he had a fishing show that needed a call screener/producer (the same thing Roz does on "Frasier") and ,as an after thought, said that I was going on vacation and would he like to fill in for me that week. Rick said yes and ,again as an after thought said "By the way I used to DJ Jazz and Blues music when I lived in Boston years ago. If there are any DJ spots available I'd like to apply". My boss asked if he'd like to fill in on the blues show on a 1 week trial run. That was on a Thursday. Friday the guy on the blues show quit. Monday I turned in my demo which my boss liked. In the meantime, after the initial show Rick filled in on, my boss' boss said "Because of the situation with Rick's wife,we need to give him more hours. I want Rick to be the new host the blues show on Saturday". My boss promised me that if Rick's wife took a turn for the worse and he needed to stay with her, or if he grew tired of doing the blues show or needed a day off, I would be the fill in host. While this is all well and good and I sort of understand, my only question is this, why didn't my boss explain to his boss "We have have a guy who has been with the station for a year now and turned in an excellent demo. I think we should promote from within rather than bring a relative outsider". He did promise me also the next opening that they had, I would be kept in consideration for. So there is what happened. So tonight after I host my karaoke show, instead of coming home, I go back to the old routine (aka grind) of going to the station, sleep on the floor and get up at 5 AM to run "Chuck Cecil's The Swingin' Years". It sucks but I have to do it. Oh well this is NOT the glamorous side of radio. Current Mood: listless | | Monday, April 21st, 2008 | | 10:57 pm |
Sometimes it doesn't pay to bust your ass
Sorry for the length of this post but I have to vent! To give you a little bit of background, as most of you know,I work as a board operator for KKJZ-FM in Long Beach, CA. When I started there, in late April of 2007, I was working only 4 hours on Saturday (5 AM - 9 AM) and 5 hours on Sunday (6 AM - 11 AM), for a total 9 hours a week. I host karaoke on Thursday & Friday. Friday's show is done at 12 AM and rather than drive all the way back to Hollywood and, literally, turn around and have to go back to Long Beach, I would sleep at the station(and not get real quality sleep at that). Since then, through hard work and going above and beyond what is expected of me, I have worked my way up to working about 30 hours a week. We have a show on the station called "Nothing But The Blues" which runs Saturdays and Sundays from 2 PM to 7 PM. The guy who did the Saturday show got tired of doing it so the station worked out a deal that he would record the show and they asked me to run it. This worked out great because I would no longer have to to sleep at the station and get to come home on Friday nights. Right before I went on vacation, I was informed that the blues show host had decided he was now tired of recording his show and wanted to step down. I asked my boss if I could take over hosting NBTB (I have worked as an on air DJ on and off for approx 13 years). He said to make him an audition show or demo which I did. The people who have heard it said it sounded very professional. Since I was supposed to have gone on vacation, they asked this guy Nick to fill in on the show. Nick used to work for the station management a long time ago. Tonight I got an e-mail from my boss saying that Nick will be the new host of NBTB and asked if I would like to go back to working the 5 AM to 9 AM shift. I'm very hurt and feel like this is a slap in the face and a demotion. I don't want to quit since I know work is hard to find right now and I do enjoy my job and don't want to go back to customer service, but Goddamn this really pisses me off!!! I mean I have worked at the station for a year now and suddenly this guy parades in and BOOM, he's given an airshift. It's like all my hard work was for nothing. I was going to send my boss an e-mail response but decided to talk to him over the phone and let him know how I feel. How do you guys think I should handle it? New icon & my TV appearence
A lot of people wated to see what my eyes looked like behind the shades so here you go. Also Saturday night as I was walking home from the subway (yes we have a subway system in the greater LA area)some woman from KCBS-TV shoved a mic in my face and asked me my reaction to Charlton Heston's death. Happy New Year
I didn't post my feelings about 2007 because that seemed to be the trend. 2007 was actually a very good year for me in that the latter part of April, after 10 months of unemployment, I got a job. But not just any job but a chance to get back into my chosen career - RADIO!!. I got hired at KKJZ-FM in Long Beach,CA. Now here it is 8 moths later and I still enjoy enjoy working here (if you can call this work). This is the happiest I have ever been at a job in a long time. As a friend of mine told me "Well, I guess your customer service days are behind you" - Truer words were never spoken :-). In other news I got a new car (well new to me - 1996 Mercury Sable with very low mileage) so no more driving that old clunker of a truck around anymore (YEA!!). I also met someone whom I had been corresponding with for a long time - Capricornrabbit (Sorry Jerry I don't know how to put those link icons in. Forgive me), Let me tell you he's one hell of a nice guy and worth the wait. So now here it is 2008 and the possibilities of adventures in my life are endless. I hope I continue to grow and expand my horizons. I want to thank everyone on my friends list regardless of whether or not we have ever corresponded. Just to know you are there means the world to me. Have a great 2008!! Current Mood: happyCurrent Music: So What - Miles Davis |
